Nick

Nick is our daffodil man. You might think that this is a part time job as daffodils only flower from January until April, but looking after daffodils is actually a 52 week of the year job (well maybe not quite, we do let Nick have some time off!)

Really Welsh daffodils start popping their heads above ground at the beginning of January and Nick and his team are kept busy until April picking every Really Welsh daffodil by hand to make sure that there are always some ready and waiting for you when you go into your local supermarket (especially for St David’s Day).

After that Nick gets ready for harvesting the daffodil bulbs, which starts at the end of June. To do this he uses a machine which is a bit like a potato harvester (very big and usually red- see photo) which picks up the bulbs. The bulbs then have to be split and dried to make sure they grow big and strong next year. Nick plants half the bulbs back in to the ground and we keep half and put them in Bulbtubes, boxes and Hessian bags, which you can find on our online shop or in your local store so that you can have a go at growing your very own Welsh daffodils (it’s very easy, no heavy equipment needed not even green fingers).

Nick’s interesting fact: Daffodils are not the only national flower that Nick has grown, he also used to grow roses in Kenya. (Those English have to go a long way for their national flower!!).
