North Wales
Really Welsh has always traditionally produced its mouth-watering local produce in the south of Wales, but when we realised that we couldn’t really be Really Welsh without producing some of the biggest and tastiest leeks in the land, we knew we had to search, and our searching led us to go north.
That’s because leeks are an entirely different kettle of fish to cauliflowers and daffs They need really deep cool soils and just the right amount of organic matter, and you can only really get that in Flintshire – Queensferry to be exact. Charlie and his team in Flintshire now have the fields there teeming with just the right blend of nutrients for mind-bogglingly good leeks, and since we started growing them in North Wales, we extended the season from September starts, to July harvesting & from last leeks in April, to last leeks in May, leaving only few weeks each year not covered by Welsh leeks – not bad progress – pats on the back all round!
Don’t forget, leeks are one of the best things about Wales, and Flintshire is the best place in all of Wales to grow them, so it’s really no wonder that our Really Welsh Leeks are some of the best you’ll taste anywhere. Give them a go and see for yourself – they’re unbelievable – and it’s all thanks to the unique growing conditions we’ve found for them.
Sadly however, not every Leek that Charlie grows make it as a Really Welsh leek – so for those that don’t make the grade, we’ve invented our award winning Really Welsh Leek & Potato Gratin (click here to find out more), which uses the best Cadog Welsh cheese, butter and milk, some excellent Pembroke Potatoes to make the Leek & Potato you’ve ever tasted, well at least the judges of the Guild of Fine Foods thought so, and gave it not only a Great Taste award, but a gold star too… Leekly lovely!
Above - Not the exact location of were we grow but some of the neighbouring hills in the very beautiful North Wales where the Really Welsh Leeks are grown.
