Really Welsh Leeks
Okay, most people don’t think leeks look beautiful. They’re much maligned, the poor things. So, we’re on a mission to make them more appealing. The secret starts with… “Silt soil”. Hardly the sexiest thing you’ll see coming from the land that gave the world Kathryn Jenkins or even Catherine Zeta Jones, but without the deep silt soils of North Wales we wouldn’t get our sensational bounty of Really Welsh Leeks.
Our soil is packed full of lovely nutrients that give our leeks that rounded, alluring taste and make them so good for you at the same time. That along with the high summer rainfall (please don’t tell the Wales tourist board we said that), makes them grow really healthily, and then rather than stuff them into packets, we band them so there’s more fresh dark green “flag” at the top of every Really Welsh Leek we pull.
We’ve got the cooler North Wales climate to thank for our lovely leeks too. They just don’t get on with the barmy southern sunshine. When we started we pulled leeks from September until March, but we’ve worked hard, finding leeks that love Wales as much as Wales loves leeks, and now Charlie and the team are pulling from late July, right through until May, helping to keep out those leeky imports, and keeping our national vegetable in stores when it matters. Did you know: leeks are all harvested by hand? It's slow – but we think well worth it.
Really Welsh leeks are looked after by Charlie Lightbown, who loves his part of North Wales, and he’s on a mission to produce great quality, fresh, local produce that is packed full of flavour. He’s succeeding too. Wales is the spiritual home of the leek after all, and if Charlie gets his way, every spare field will be used for them (don’t worry, we don’t think he will)
