Show Time – Llanellwedd here we come!

July this year has been as busy as anyone can remember it. For a start I’m trying to finish off the cauliflower planting here in South Wales – so that we’ve got all our winter crops safely tucked up in the ground – hopefully giving us the continuous flow of Really Welsh Cauliflower that you’ve come to expect.

As well as planting, Nick and the team are harvesting daffodil bulbs, drying them and are packing them into tubes, boxes & bags, firstly to sell at shows, then in shops later in the summer and autumn, and if that wasn’t enough, Charlie started to pull Leeks too.

Yes the very earliest Welsh Leeks ever we think were harvested by Charlie and the North Wales team at the tail end of last week on our farm in Flintshire. No big quantities yet, but Really Welsh Leeks should be back in store very soon (I’ll let you know when, don’t worry).

Then finally its Show time... Rhiannon, Richard & Carwen (our leek) were in Cardiff Bay last weekend for the Cardiff International Food Festival – and guess what – the sun came out! Richard reported that right on the stroke of mid-day Friday, just as the show opened its doors, out came the sun. it was so warm on Sunday in fact that Carwen, the Really Welsh Leek, started to go a little limp – and had to be cooled off – but despite the weather, our fridge of Really Welsh Ready Meals soon emptied out, and we couldn’t keep cauliflowers on the shelf either.

With Cardiff all done late on Sunday evening, we are turning our attention to the Royal Welsh at Llanellwedd, Buith. It’s not difficult to remember the rain, mud, stuck cars, mud, and more mud that became the main feature of the 2007 show.

The team setting up there this year report that a huge amount of work has been dome lately to try and make sure whatever the weather, the mud doesn’t get in the way this year. The main ring is all new, there are new hard roads on the showground, loads of drains have been dug, and even the car parks have hard standing & tracks.

Our shop is ready too (nearly), ready to serve Ready Meal samples, Daffodils, Cauliflowers and even a Leek or two...

As well as produce, you can shake hands with Carwen, meet Glamorgan Cricketers Robert Croft & Alex Wharf, or even bump into  some Cardiff Blues players, so if you are making the trip – please pop in and say hi, we can’t wait to see you there...
