Leeked Away!
After a hot week working the crowds (if not David Cameron) at the Royal Welsh Show in Mid Wales, Carwen our Leek sadly pulled out of the famous 20/Twenty Mascot race at the Rose Bowl, Hampshire on Saturday.
“Despite the lure of Live Sky TV, Carwen just wasn’t up to a trip to Hampshire early on Saturday after hours pounding the show ground from early Monday until late Thursday evening, Carwen just needs to put his roots up” suggests Richard Arnold, who is his “minder”… “We were thrilled to get the chance to represent Glamorgan Cricket at Finals Day” he adds, “but after the week we’ve had getting him down to Southampton became a huge headache – we couldn’t even find a vehicle big enough”.
Carwen was politely rebuffed on Thursday when David Cameron passed his stand at the Royal Welsh Show, Arnold asked the Tory leader if he’d pose with the huge Leek (as other politicians of all colours had earlier in the week) but Mr Cameron said that whilst he admired the leek – he didn’t think a picture was a good idea… (Something about politicians and Leek captions?)
Earlier in the Week Carwen had met players from Cardiff Blues, the Welsh Agricultural Minister, Elin Jones, and the shadow Minister for Wales, a group of African tribesmen, local Powys Police, and hundreds of Carwen fans… “In short he had a great time at Llanellwedd” suggests Richard, “but with a host of other events this summer – we think a bit of “me time” for the leek is wise – so he’s got his roots up and is chilling…” (remember, Leeks like to be kept cool, it stops them from bolting!)
