Going Week for Leeks

We’ve been growing leeks in North Wales now for a couple of years, but unlike our cauliflowers, we can’t grow leeks in Wales in the summer – which is why, despite our best efforts if you chose a leek in June & July or Early August, it will probably be Dutch, Spanish, or at best from another part of the UK.
The season for Welsh leeks is though getting longer, as we get better at producing our national vegetable within our own borders. In fact, if we hadn’t had that monsoon effect in July, we’d probably have had Welsh leeks in Early September, but nobody likes to stand up to their ankles in water for 6 weeks, and that’s what our leek crop went though despite our best efforts and 7 pumps working 24/7 to try and keep the water level in check. (see top picture).
So although slightly delayed we kicked off the harvest in mid September, and suggested that the 1st week October should become the first “Welsh Leek Week”, and something that we hope to build on every year now – so if you’ve leaky ideas, or fancy seeing me dressed up in a giant leek outfit, please drop me a line….

Happy Leek eating...
